What’s so special about the Moos?

Healthy Moos

Over the years we have refined our breeding to suit the autumn calving, grass based system we have set up at Webbery. We carefully select Holstein bulls for health, fertility and longevity traits and of course, high quality milk.

This breeding, coupled with attentive stockmanship, comfortable winter housing and a preventative approach to herd health management, means we consistently achieve exceptionally high standards of health and welfare and keep antibiotic use to a minimum. Healthy, happy, chilled out cows are our top priority!

Bred to graze

To make the most of the whole grazing season we need a resilient and compact cow who can go out in the early spring and late autumn, grazing for 8 months of the year. We breed our cows for small stature, with good legs and feet and which are highly fertile so they are well suited to walking to our furthest paddocks and getting in calf each year to remain in our block calving pattern.

The majority of the herd is outside at grass for most of the grazing season. But, the beauty of our system is that we have great indoor facilities to take extra care of the oldest and milkiest girls when grazing conditions are marginal, in early spring and autumn, through calving and in early lactation where they peak in production and grass alone is not enough.

Herd stats

Each cow in the herd has a complete record of her breeding, health and production which we use to tailor her feeding and management. The milking parlour monitors milk yield and the quality of the milk is tested on an individual cow basis, quarterly.

Cows in herd - 370

Yield per cow/year - 8,200 L

Av Butterfat % in the milk - 4.37

Av Protein % in the milk - 3.60
